Is ‘free’ pre-media software an effective way to advertise?

by

Recently we have seen a number of pre-media companies providing institutions free software, do we think this is for the greater good of the next generation of pre-media specialists or does it serve the software companies as free advertising for them. If free software is provided by companies such as Alwan, Dalim, EskoArtwork, Quark etc etc, should all edutcational institutes not benefit from their genereous givaways?
